Soon to come to USA
The micro hybrid drive technology in the smart fortwo mhd uses a start/stop function that automatically switches the engine off at traffic lights or in a traffic jam, and back on when things get moving again. The mhd switches the engine off as soon as you brake and fall below a speed of 5 mph. When the time comes to set off again, take your foot off the brake pedal and the engine seamlessly restarts, automatically engaged in first gear ready to continue your journey. This reduces both fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. In fact, the smart fortwo mhd's start/stop generator enables a fuel saving of up to 29% in urban settings and 11% for combined urban and extra-urban driving [1], all without compromising on performance or comfort. smart fortwo mhd is available on our 71 bhp pure, pulse and passion models from Dec 2009 U.S.A, with mhd petrol engine models in 2009. Combined fuel consumption for 71bhp coupé of 65.7 mpg, combined CO2 emissions of 103g; combined fuel consumption for 71bhp cabrio of 64.2 mpg.

Mr. Kahn, you are a genius and bring great things to us - I can't wait for a MHD cabrio.

I would love 65 MPG. Save what I have lost in my 401K

Currently the Nikkei is down 650pts so tomorrow does not look like it will be much better for us. Funny thing is that US Airways has gone up 67% in the last 3 months and both Walmart and Mc Donald's look like a good deal with the economy. My free advice to 451s investors. You can also double check.

MHD only helps if you are in a city and suffer a lot of stop / go driving. MHD makes no difference at all when highway cruising.

If you have a ScanGauge, it is alarming to see how much fuel is wasted when stopped. That's where the MHD comes in. In essence it is a belt driven starter / generator that can restart an engine at any moment even when the engine is still turning - something a conventional starter motor cannot do without tearing the ring gears apart. Larger capacity battery is part of the MHD package so that you don't run flat when stuck at a dead stop on something like the PA Turnpike in a winter blizard. The MHD generates a lot more amperage than the standard systems, so battery recharge is faster. Unlike a conventional Hybrid, the smart MHD does not use the battery to propel the vehicle.

It is very improbable that smart MHD can be retrofitted to existing vehicles.

PS: have US gas prices dropped yet to reflect the oil prices? (And any guesses about post 1104 prices?)

prices have dropped below $3 a gallon, $2.20-$2.35 are predicted soon, even with the rag-heads dropping production by 1.5-2 million barrels a day, americans are driving less, selling off some of them huge SUV's and buying smaller cars.

i wouldn't mind an MHD system, if some auxiliary oil pump kept the oil pressure up while the engine was stopped, so when the engine started, under load, would not induce extra "load" on dry engine components from oil draining away while stopped (maybe i should patent this!) i'd go for a MHD.

I wish I lived where you did... We are no where NEAR sub-$3 gas yet in San Diego.

how much CO2 will the driver and passenger emit?
CO2 is not a pollutant or a "greenhouse gas". CO2 is an AlGore farce. ask any one of these idiots
for a debate, even offer them $1,000,000 and they are "no shows". global warming is a farce .

better MPGs are always welcome, if they don't sacrifice the life of the engine.

personally, i could live with a 500cc 2 cylinder smart @ 30-35HP, that would knock accelleration down
to geo metro level, but increase economy.
