451 smart fortwo

I'm sure someone once asked about what displays were found to be most useful on the ScanGauge... here's mine.

It's taken a while to bed the 'Gauge in on the smart; I can't prove it, but it seems as if the car has been programmed to change ECU maps after 1500 km (1000 miles) and then again after 3000 km (2000 miles). There definitely seems to have been sudden changes in performance, smoothness and fuel economy. I'm seeing very accurate results on the 'Gauge and fuel economy has bettered the advertised 4.9 lhk (48 mpg US) average. See bottom right hand readout. The top right readout is Tank Used Litres - which is very close (within 0.02 litres) to what it takes to refill the tank.

XGauge codes that are most useful to me have been combinations of:
First character:
0 = Average Fuel Economy
1 = Fuel Used
Second character:
0 = Current Trip
4 = Tank Trip

I have emailed ScanGauge asking if they can supply any known smart specific XGauge codes. No reply. Has anyone managed to get any of the codes off the ScanGauge web site to give meaningful readouts?

Seems like you can "add" your own gauges.

YES!, you can add or create your own, using the data read from the car.. the only one I have put in has been the horsepower one in. Its really more for your own info of how little the car really needs to put around town. it seems that we in general use about 15 HP... of the whopping 70 we have on tap!!!

It's a little confusing if you don't use a ScanGauge 'cos there is a UK device called an XGauge that fits into the clock pod on the roadsters and 450 fortwo and does a lot of things the ScanGauge does. This is not it. Neither is it error codes.

see: http://www.scangauge.com/support/xgauge.shtml

ScanGauge have what they call "Add-A-Gauge" or "XGauge". These are additional / extended functions for the ScanGauge to tap into data as the car runs. You can add up to 24 customised gauges. At the simplest level, you can add trip type gauges to the gauge list for the main display. That is easy to do. I have done that to add the Trip Fuel Consumption gauge. The teaser is that ScanGauge have published a list of XGauge codes for a lot of potentially useful readouts, but they tend to be Ford and GM specific. One of the gauges that could be handy is "Remaining Oil Life". The Toyota Prius has codes that the ScanGauge can add gauges for things like State of Charge, Battery Current, etc. I was hoping that someone has explored the XGauge codes and discovered any that give useful data for the smart. Top of the list off the web is HorsePower... it seems to work but is not very useful. They list a lot "Fuel Trim" gauges... I haven't clue what they are used for.

That's about all I saw... using about 15 to 20 hp.

ScanGauge have just replied to my email request; they wrote:

Ian,

While we do not have smart car specific codes right now, we hope to have some available in the future. If you keep checking our website, we will post information there when we do get new codes available.

Thank you,

my guess would be a smart only needs 15HP to cruise at 62mph/100kph. i had one auto magazine that used to publish the HP required to make a car go 60mph in their tests, unfortunately, i threw out all my car mags before i got married last year, so i don't know which one it was.

Please read the full postings. The use of the XGauge term is a coincidence. If you owned a ScanGauge, you would know what the topic is about.

Visit the ScanGauge web site. They use the term XGauge to mean extended / added gauges for the ScanGauge. I am well aware of the Welte XGauge. I thought I had made it clear in this posting that that is NOT the topic. Please see: http://www.scangauge.com/support/xgauge.shtml

I guess punctuation, grammar, spelling, capitalization, intelligibility, etc., are not strong points on this blog.

I made an illegal U turn in front of a policeman. A little bit nasty police officer pulled me over, got my license and registration. When he came back, he asked me to get out, now I thought I was really in trouble, but he just wanted to ask questi...
