My reservation on Aug. 2007 and configuration on Apr. 08 and still haven't got my smart. The dealer said it's coming in Nov.09. (15 months ). I believe I will cancel my smart if it doesn't come in as a 2009 model. Even if it is an 09 I do believe I will still cancel.Smart must think their customers' are fools. First- they are delivering 09 model in the world(except the U.S.) with mild hybrids. Second- smart is delivering 2008 models when every other car company is offering 2009s. There isn't much difference between 08 and 09 except when one considerers depreciation. How much depreciation? Maybe not much now, but one or two years from now there will be. Third- Smart is increasing their price ($400) on 09 models for 3 minor and I mean minor improvements. Smart must think their customers are idiots. Fourth- by 2010 model year, 2009 calender year, just about every major auto company will have a full hybrid offered. Some will even have a plug-in hybrid. SO 451 FOOLS AND IDIOTS(SMART BELIEVES WE ARE) CONTINUE TO BUY THE LOW TECH 2008-2009 SMART VEHICLES AND FIND OUT IN TWO YEARS(TEARS) WHAT YOUR CAR IS REALLY WORTH. I really enjoyed being a member of the 451 club and will continue being a member for the time being. Neal of Texas
Wow, rant much? I agree that they should be delivering 2009's to us now, but I hardly think we are "fools and idiots" for buying a 2008. Frankly, I *prefer* gas-only engines, since they are owner-maintainable, less complicated than a hybrid and road-proven. I'm not sure I would want a hybrid version of the smart the first year they come out. There's nothing wrong with low-tech when it works (and works well).
As for the $400 additional cost for a 2009, I find that to be a small issue hardly worthy of your ranting. Vehicle prices change from year-to-year and this vehicle is no exception.
If your buying a car (particularly one that's not a luxury car) and you're concerned about depreciation, then the smart will definitely NOT be for you. It's a CAR. Cars lose value the moment you drive off the lot.
Then again, I'm the type of person who drives the wheels off a vehicle before I get a new one. I'm nursing along a 2000 Honda CR-V with 220,000 miles on it until I get my smart. I'm pretty hard on vehicles.

Response from Neal in Texas: Club members and owners of the 451 are certainly NOT fools or idiots. This last responder has missed the point of my email. What is the point one might ask? The point is that smart is taking advantage of future American 451 owners'. We shouldn't allow this to happen.
Future 451 owners should do as I did and email and complain (cancel their order if appropriate) that this discrimination of U.S. smart owners should not continue.
My emails intention was to point out the short comings of smart and MB. I also wanted to present another way of looking at the practical and financial reality of owning a smart. If one completely ignores these realities then one can really be considered a fool.
So future smart owners go back and reread my email and if after considering all the facts presented you decide to buy the smart-GREAT. At least the reader/owners will have all sides so a individual informed decision can be made.
I went on the orphan list and receive my Smart car 60 days later. I am also on the waiting list for a production model. When that arrived I am planning on selling the one I received from being on the orphan list.
