Just bought a 2009 Smart Passion, but it only came with one key. Discovered that it's going to cost me about $275.00 for a second one. Was going to get a third, but for that price, I don't think so. My question is...do I really need to have (purchase) the fob/remote half of the key just to have an "EMERGENCY KEY" that will unlock the door(s) and start the engine? Or will purchasing the "SHAFT" half of the key perform those basic funtions? Does anyone know?

The key blade will only unlock the driver's side door and you can turn the ignition to the on position and move the gear selector to Neutral but the car will not start without the chip in the FOB. Try and get the party from whom you purchased the vehicle to pay for the replacement key. This seems to be a common occurance with dealers who sell used vehicles and then tell you there is only one key.
Permalink Reply by Keith McKone on March 20, 2012 at 6:12pm I got two keys, as the wife carries one with her. I had no idea they cost that MUCH. I was going to sell my car to a car dealer yesterday. He asked me if I had two keys. I now know why...*s*
He offered me too low for a 2009 passion, with only 12000 km.
A lot of car dealers like to keep the second key, especially if the vehicle is financed. I would insist that they provide you with that key at their expense since the vehicle comes with two keys. Some dealers will give you a hard time but if you are persistant and polite, you will hopefully prevail.
