I haven't given it much thought BUT I am now curious if anyone else has
had this as well or if I am the only one. My car, an 09 Passion for two
makes a quick short whistle when slowing down to a complete stop or an
almost complete stop like a turn. It makes the whistle noise when what
feels like to me the clutch it engaged (thrown out). Like when you are
slowing down in a manual 4 speed transmission car and and just before
you stop you throw out the clutch and take it out of gear. When my
smart does this it whistles, not incredibly loud but loud enough for me
to notice it even with the windows up. Am I alone in this? Do I have
the only whistling smart car lol ?
As I was told repeatably by those moronic tech guys working for Benz+smart that "a brand new $18000 CAN plus Smart car makes all kind of noise under any normal circumstances. Unless it starts falling apart there ain't a thing you have to worry about".
i've had my smart for over 2 years, 18K+ miles, i don't get any noises, when it's cold, it hunts back and forth below 20mph which is annoying, after a few minutes, it shifts normal. this spring i'll be putting in a performance exhaust, so things will be louder, i ordered it on ebay last october, it arrived mid november, too damned cold outside to mess with. i'll drop in a K&N air filter at the same time, zoom zoom!
Mine is over 20k km and the only noise that bothers me is a gremlin in the dash that buzzes at around 2000 rpm... the infamous vibration frequency of turbo smarts. It comes and goes and so far has eluded eviction. Simplest answer for me is not to lug in 5th gear at low speeds.
As for whistles... if the air filter box lid is not properly fitted, an air whistle may be heard. The lid is a little tricky to fit properly - the rear (towards front of car) must be seated properly before the clips are snapped on... mine was loose when new after I asked the sales guy if the filter was rectangular or round (K&N have the wrong filter listed for the turbo). He failed to refit the lid properly and I soon realised that there was an air intake noise.. easily fixed. There is also a slight whistle when the turbo dumps pressure when slowing down - that's normal.
Anyone who wonders about car build QA these days... listen to recall notices Toyota and Honda are now announcing!
Well I have 22k miles on mine in less than a year so I need to get done what needs to be done before my warranty goes. Dunno if I will be able to purchase the extended warranty, I have to consult with the Mrs on that lol. My car makes another noise that worries me, when going very slow and coasting it sounds like the gears are grinding a bit, like the smart doesn't throw the clutch all the way out when it is going to shift down to 2nd or 1st. Am I the only one who gets this again? Last thing I need is for my tranny or clutch to go right after the warranty expires.
That measely warranty by smart USA is pathetic. smart Australia is three years, unlimited mileage... we pay a bit more for the new price... maybe we get a better smart... we only get the pulse (the sporty smart); no pure or passion, so price comparisons are not simple. Auto is not standard. I got it as an option... it came with the leather seats and upgraded sound package. The engine is by Mitsubishi and is relatively under stressed in the smart tune.
Mine had a spotty crankshaft positioning sensor - replaced very quickly under warranty. Only smart centres have the diagnostic programs to find all the little problems; so find a smart smart centre to give it a check up.
Yeah, I plan to make an appointment to address the issues. I average 300 miles a week on my Smart so that leaves me little time before I hit the 24k mark :(
Couldn't tell you if it's any better or not I did just have a service last Saturday at The Smart center in Orange Park and was treated like gold, had a great loaner car to go grab lunch in and my car was ready way ahead of schedule and spotless (my…
