Smart stories from Julie's Garage... Day 29

Down to the wire here... and still no phone call.

Maybe it's like Domino's and if you don't get it in 30 days or less...?

You'd think they'd be able to give me a tracking number like UPS.

Oh, I hate waiting.

Smart stories from Julie's Garage... Day 28

Unrequited

No phone call.

I've regressed to high school again. Sitting by the phone, willing it to ring.

I know they have my name and number because I got the call that it was "scheduled to arrive in the US within the next 30 days."

I suppose it could be "in the US." Just not at my dealership. It's somewhere, lost, in a big truck, like a wayward puppy.

Oh where, oh where has my little car… Continue

After my hospital appointment today I went to my local Doctor. And in the car park I HAD to park here.

Smart stories from Julie's Garage... supplemental

One more thing...

Barry, my Volkswagen, is beginning to suspect that I'm having an affair with another car. He's starting to act suspicious and insecure. Last week he dropped a cylinder and threw a brake shoe. On Saturday, one of the window crank handles broke and this morning a visor clip broke.

I keep trying to reassure him that he is not being sold and will always be my first car love. He will be going to my mechanic's for an extended spa stay when the… Continue

Smart stories from Julie's Garage Day 27

Day 27....

Got the email "your car is 30 days away" from my Smart dealership on February 1st, but still no sign of the "it's here" call. They keep teasing me; last week they hooked me up with the Daily News to do a story on Smart owners and future Smart owners that are waiting delivery... it ended up on the front page! A photo and everything.… Continue

WOW!

Well after months of seeing these cute little cars on the streets, I finally had my chance to ride in one yesterday. What a GREAT car! I have to say I was more then impressed and it beat all my expectations. The leg room in these cars is unbelievable. When sitting in it I couldn't get over how big it felt in side. If someone had blind folded me and put me inside without seeing the outside, I would have guessed I was in a full size car or van.

Of course the fact that the one I got to… Continue

The Smart Car - Four Two Passion Cabriolet. Pure joy!

A few years ago I heard about this little car called the Smart Car Four Two. There was notions of it making to the US but, I said someday if they do, I've got to have one! Fast forward several years and my opportunity came. The Smart Car arrival to the US was announced last year and $99 reservations where given out at their site (www.smartusa.com). The first dealerships were announced last month through their site. Two dealerships opened in Massachusetts.… Continue

My First "smart ride" (TM)

Earlier today I had the pleasure to ride in a smart. It was my first smart ride ever. So what?, you may ask. What is so special about a smart ride? This ride was very special indeed. Not only was it a smart, but it was a smart forfiveone ride!

This car is awesome. It is so awesome that I thought it was manufactured like that. And not until the… Continue

The Meaning of the Hand

People often ask me, what does the hand in my avatar mean? Here are 3 interpretations, feel free to send me others:

1. My hand before the operation

2. It represent the suffering of human kind and our inevitable salvation

or, more elaborately,

3. The 3 turned down finger show how most of the world is dying and the 2 fingers on each side show how separate we are in the wold and they point away form each other showing how we are all on the wrong… Continue

"Snowflake" icon on instrument cluster

I was driving last night in manual mode, and a "snowflake like" symbol started flashing between my transmission position indicator and my outside temperature. It then stopped flashing after a few km, stayed solid, and then disappeared.

Anyone have any idea what it was trying to tell me? I read the manual again last night (twice) trying to figure it out.

Almost 2000 km on my smart,

Mollie, my old lab, is ticked right off about the not being allowed to ride shot gun, and I… Continue

Waiting...........and still waiting.....

Being the impatient person that I am, I cannot believe I've waited EIGHT MONTHS for this car and I'm still waiting! Yes, I reserved my little smartie later than many (end of June). I was really not aware of the car before that, except a photo of a traveler in Rome with one. Figured they were strictly a European car. Little did I know that, after our trip to Europe in June, I would be in LOVE! We got home on June 23rd and I reserved my car on June 25th. I just configured on January 26th, and now… Continue

How I decided to test drive a smart and buy one.

One Sunday morning I opened the automotive portion of the local paper and saw the smart was demostrated that past week in town. After beating myself up for being so uninformed and missing that opportunity, I decided to order my smart and promised myself that I would test drive it when the demo ride was near by. I figured $99 was not too much to risk and smart would return it at anytime-no risk there.

I few months later a smart demo came to a nearby town( 2 hour drive) and I took my first… Continue

Waiting and Patching

I recently returned from 4 weeks in Frankfurt, Germany where the amount of Smart Cars reminded me of the Beetle Invasion of the 60's and 70's here in the US. My wife grows more anxious every day waiting for her yellow Passion Coupe. We are "patching our other cars" hoping for our invitation to order soon.

I have uploaded a photo I took of the Wiesbaden, Germany train station across the street from it and caught a Smart Car leading the… Continue

How I decide to test drive a Smart and buy one!

In early 2006 while my wife was working 2 days a week in Detroit, I decided to tag along with a mission. Knowing the Smart was already for sale in Canada, I Googled the local Smart dealer, mapped the location and headed through the tunnel on my quest for a test drive. After paying my toll and clearing the nice boarder guard on the Canadian side I headed for the Windsor Mercedes dealership. On the way I passed a canadian beer store for a purchase no consumption. Arriving at the dealership I… Continue

Thumbs up?

How many of you smart car owners get the "thumbs up" from onlookers? I'd say it's been about 70% of those who pass me or I pass them, usually accompanied by a big smile...even from those big hemi pickup truck types! the other 30% seem to be saying something on the order of..." what the f..?"

Finally got it

Well, I have had my fortwo going on 3 weeks now. I remember when it first started when I happened across the car doing a web search for micro cars back in Feb. 07. I immediately liked the car and started following it's path to the USA. I learned about it's history as well as putting down my money to reserve one. I had never heard of, or even seen, a smart fortwo. Now, a year later, I actually have one. Still, so many have not even seen one and I'm continuously telling those about the car. It… Continue
